ICI Academic║ The First Volume of the English Book Series of Curriculum Reform and School Innovation in China Has Been Published

The curriculum reform of basic education in China has accumulated a lot of valuable experience however, little was known about in the international academic circles and educational policy research circles. How to spread the Chinese voice and tell the story of Chinese curriculum reform?

Adhering to the belief of “Sharing China’s experience to the world”, the Institute of Curriculum and Instruction (ICI) of East China Normal University invited influential experts on the international stage to share the story of “China’s curriculum reform” and planned for the book series- Curriculum Reform and School Innovation in China, which is the first book series about this topic domestically.

The book series is co-edited by Professor Cui Yunhuo, the director of ICI, and Lee Shulman, who is the former chairman of AERA and professor emeritus of Stanford University, and co-published by Springer Group. The first volume-School-based Curriculum in China, edited by Cui Yunhuo, Lei Hao and Zhou Wenye, has been published!

Insisting Responsibility and Making Innovation

The book series of Curriculum Reform and School Innovation in China aims to provide a series of academic works for the international academic community. Specifically, we make a more comprehensive, detailed and in-depth analysis of the history and process of curriculum reform in China, the characteristics and influence of curriculum reform, and the impact of curriculum reform on schools and the whole educational ecology, etc. From diverse dimensions, such as “Chinese school-based curriculum development” and “Chinese school curriculum and teaching investigation report”, we spread “Chinese Curriculum discourse” with new knowledge, new vision and new insight.


Diversified Themes

This book series is dedicated to the integration of domestic and international academic perspectives, different perspectives from curriculum reform participants-reform practitioners-researchers, macro-meso-micro analysis levels. We aim to provide more local insights, professional wisdom and theory to understand and examine China’s curriculum reform and school reform in depth.

The book series contains diversifies themes, which covers:

1. The policy of China’s curriculum reform.

2. Curriculum and instruction in Chinese schools.

3. Professional learning and development of Chinese teachers.

4. The reform and innovation of Chinese schools.

5. Curriculum leadership of Chinese schools.

6. Chinese experience of Curriculum Reform.

7. Chinese experience of school reform and innovation.


Professional Cooperation

The book series is an international academic series contains 20 volumes, and is published in cooperation with the well-known international academic publisher-Springer. It is also the first book series signed by Spinger Press with Chinese university research institutions on the topic of Chinese educational experience.

Top-level Collaboration

The book series is edited by Professor Cui Yunhuo and Professor Lee Shulman. Professor Chen Shuangye serves as the executive editor. A strong international editorial board team is composed of internationally renowned curriculum experts and professors of ICI.

The First Volume Has Been Published

It took more than 2 years from the planning to the publication of the first volume of the series. Under the careful polishing of the experts, the first volume of the book, School-based Curriculum in China, edited by Cui Yunhuo, Lei Hao, Zhou Wenye and other experts from ICI, has been officially published in Spinger.


This book is the first English book to systematically introduce school-based curriculum development of basic education in China, which provides an important basis for the world academic community to understand school-based curriculum development in China.

A Brief Introduction of the First Volume-School-based Curriculum in China

The first volume of the series mainly focuses on three aspects: background and concepts, practice and cases, challenges and prospects of school-based curriculum development in China.

The first part introduces the development process of school-based curriculum in China in detail, discusses the Chinese mode of school-based curriculum development from the perspective of value pursuit, procedure and types, plan compilation, evaluation and consideration of school-based curriculum.

The second part adopts the method of case study, taking Maiyuqiao Primary School in Hangzhou, Xishan Senior High School in Jiangsu Province and Gongchen Middle School in Hangzhou as examples to analyze the methods of school-based curriculum design.

The third part describes the challenges and prospects of school-based curriculum in China, in order to form the value recognition of school-based curriculum, so as to enhance the construction of school curriculum capacity and establish a curriculum review mechanism at school and local levels.

Continuous Sharing

The second volume of the series-Explorations of Chinese Moral Education Curriculum and Textbooks, which is edited by Professor Gao Desheng of ICI, is currently being published.
