ICI New Book Symposium║Symposium for Professor Zhou Yong's new book "A Century of Path-Seeking: National Renaissance and Curriculum Reform in Modern China" was successfully held

The symposium was hosted by Professor Lei Hao, deputy director of the ICI. Professor Cheng Tianjun, vice president of Nanjing Normal University, Professor Liu Yunshan, vice dean of the School of Education of Peking University, Professor Li Lin, Assistant director of the School of Education of East China Normal University, Lin Lan,director of the Editorial Department of Educational Development Research, Professor Peng Zhengmei, Director of the Institute of International Comparative and Educational Studies of East China Normal University, and Professor Xiong Heping of the School of Teacher Education of Ningbo University attended the symposium. Experts and scholars from the ICI, including Cui Yunhuo, An Guiqing, Gao Desheng, Ke Zheng, Liu Junyan, Wu Gangping, Liu Lianghua, Shi Yuchen, Wang Yanling, Yang Xiaozhe, Zhang Wei, and Zhang Xiaolei, as well as teachers and students from the School of Education of East China Normal University, including Zhu Xiaochai and Huang Yangyuan from East China Normal University Press.


At the beginning of the event, Professor Cui Yunhuo, director of the ICI of East China Normal University, delivered a welcome speech. Professor Cui Yunhuo congratulated Professor Zhou Yong on the publication of his new book and sincerely thanked Professor Zhou Yong for sharing his new book with his peers. He also pointed out that the publication of this book is not only a major event for Professor Zhou Yong himself, but also a major event for the ICI, marking a major breakthrough of the ICI in the field of curriculum history.


Subsequently, Professor Zhou Yong shared the origins of his new book, research methods, research results and research deficiencies in four sections, namely "Why write", "How to write", "What to write" and "Insufficiencies", and outlined the key contents of the book for us.


In the interactive discussion session, experts and scholars at the meeting discussed and exchanged ideas around the new book. The scholars fully affirmed the breakthrough of Professor Zhou Yong's new book, pointing out that Professor Zhou Yong is quite distinctive and capable in terms of research perspective, problem awareness and theoretical methods.



Many scholars pointed out that the book "A Century of Path Finding: National Renaissance and Curriculum Reform in Modern China" takes "national revival" as its title, starts from curriculum sociology and social cultural theory, uses the narrative writing method of "storytelling", uses a large number of archives, collections, diaries, newspapers, letters and other historical materials, and discusses the complex process of curriculum reform in China in the past century from a specific perspective. It has made important contributions to the curriculum field and set a research example for later generations.




In addition, the experts and scholars also put forward their own suggestions and opinions to Professor Zhou Yong from the aspects of writing clues, research field definition, research expansion direction, historical materials and research theory elaboration. Professor Zhou Yong responded to the discussions of the experts and scholars one by one, and thanked them for pointing out the direction for further research.



Finally, Professor Cui Yunhuo expressed his feelings about Professor Zhou Yong's new book with three keywords: First, "surprised". He was surprised that the book contains so many historical facts and stories of curriculum reform; second, "shocked". He was shocked by the topic of more than 500,000 words and nearly 100 characters, which is actually far beyond the scope of the curriculum; third, "warned". He was warned that as a curriculum scholar, one should read more history, learn from history, improve political stance, and face the new problems of contemporary curriculum reform and find new directions.

Nowadays, we are facing "a great change that has not happened in a century". As the "national team" of curriculum reform, the Institute of Curriculum and Instruction of East China Normal University should learn from history, stand at the height of national rejuvenation, cultural confidence, Chinese-style modernization and the construction of an educational power, and under the guidance of Xi Jinping thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, we should not forget our roots, absorb foreign things, face the future, insist on problem-oriented, and strive to open up a new situation in the curriculum reform of basic education in our country.
