ICI Seminar║Editor-in-Chief Yang Jiuquan of Journal of East China Normal University (Educational Science Edition) talks about "Writing and Publishing"
2024-10-15
In order to provide learning support for the academic development of graduate students, on the afternoon of October 9, the curriculum department invited Mr. Yang Jiuquan, the editor-in-chief and editor of the core journal "Journal of East China Normal University (Educational Science Edition)", and the researcher of the curriculum department, to give a lecture entitled "Writing and Publishing: Journal Institutional Norms and Problem Awareness of Papers". The lecture was hosted by Liu Chenlu, a doctoral student of the 2024 class, and teachers and students of the curriculum department participated in the study.
Mr. Yang Jiuquan introduced the journal and the paper respectively. He first emphasized that "papers are not written, but researched", and the paper is an academic text presentation of research results.
Mr. Yang Jiuquan quoted Thomas Kuhn's discussion on "papers" and explained the theory of papers as the basic paradigm of modern scientific knowledge production. Then, he introduced the four functions of academic journals in constructing disciplines from the perspective of genesis (registration function, evaluation and identification function, dissemination function and archiving function), pointing out that it is precisely because of the publication of academic journals that there is a trajectory of repeated dissemination of papers, and the knowledge boundaries of disciplines and the organizational boundaries of academic communities can be portrayed.
When talking about the relationship between academic journals and authors, Professor Yang used the metaphors of "picking a daughter-in-law" and "marrying a daughter" vividly and figuratively to remind graduate students that as newcomers in academic research, they should sit around academic journals in the form of writing and publishing papers, and play the "board game" of academic dialogue with academic journal people, peer reviewers, and readers, and actively participate in the construction of the academic community. Professor Yang Jiuquan emphasized that only by understanding these can we establish, consolidate and improve our academic mission and academic consciousness in scientific research and paper writing and publishing.
In the "Problem Awareness" section, Professor Yang discussed the "problem triangle" and "problem three-dimensionality" of the paper in detail, and arranged seven common problem misunderstandings. "Problem triangle" refers to "Problem-Question-Issue". "Problem three-dimensionality" refers to the "what-regularity, why-regularity, and for what-normativity" dimensions of the problem. Through the construction of frameworks and matrices, tools are provided for listeners to identify and understand "problem awareness".
In this Seminar, Professor Yang used humorous and easy-to-understand language to clarify the norms and principles of research and writing for graduate students. This not only provided participants with practical writing skills, but also inspired everyone to think about academic research, making the students full of confidence and expectations for their future research. Participants said they benefited a lot and had a clearer direction on how to improve their academic abilities.
