Professor Liu Jian, from National Center for School Curriculum and Textbook Development Ministry of Education, was invited to visit our institute on September 30, 2010. He made a lecture, named New Curriculum: How far we have gone for institute’s faculties and students. The lecture was chaired by director Professor Cui Yunhuo.

The lecture systematically reviewed and reflected on the development of the ongoing curriculum reform. Started with a question: What's " new" when we say "new curriculum" , which was put forward at the beginning of this curriculum reform, Professor Liu reviewed the ten-year development process and described it as four steps: "excited", "confused and distress", "controversy and reflection"

and "staying stalemate". Then he convincingly refuted the oppositions to the new mathematics curriculum from CPPCC members and mathematicians by analyzing a number of comparative data of student achievement tests from experimental and non-experimental areas. He admitted that it was extremely difficult to propel the reform and achieve its original goals, but a lot of practical experience and wisdom within the reform deserved our attention and research. Finally, he emphasized that the core of education was to understand and study students, and therefore the new curriculum also appeal to the principle of "people base".
